Lighthouse Christmas by Toni Buzzeo - ADVISABLE

Buzzeo, Toni  Lighthouse Christmas  Illustrated by Nancy Carpenter  Dial Books, 2011.  $16.99  PICTURE BOOK.  Content: G.

Frances and Peter live in a lighthouse with their father on an island out from the bay.  This is their first Christmas without their mother and they are thinking about going to have Christmas with their aunt and leaving their father to work the lighthouse, but when a sailor is rescued because Frances helped her father, the kids decide to stay at the lighthouse for Christmas.  On Christmas morning an airplane flies over the lighthouse and drops a package with lots of goodies and a note from Flying Santa.

At the end of the book there is a neat description of the Flying Santa Service which is a real service that flies over lighthouses still today and drops packages for Christmas so that lighthouse keepers and their families will know of the sailors’ appreciation for their sacrifices.  Great story with a factual basis.

EL (K-3) (4-6)-ADVISABLE.  Reviewer, C. Peterson.
