The Boy on Cinnamon Street by Phoebe Stone - OPTIONAL

Stone, Phoebe The Boy on Cinnamon Street, 234 pgs. Scholastic, 2012. $16.99 Content: Language: G; Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG.

Louise is a seventh grader who feels lost since her world changed in the past year. She now lives with her dotting grandparents and has her two best friends, a brother and sister, Henderson and Reni. Louise has blocked out her memories from a year ago and quit the gymnastics team, but after a boy delivers pizza to her house she finds a love note under the doormat, which puts Louise and Reni in pursuit of the pizza boy. However, their attentions may be misguided and the person leaving Louise love notes may be closer than they realize.

This is a sweet book about friendship and family. At times it is a bit predictable, but overall it is enjoyable. The main character struggles through a difficult time, but with the love of those around her she is able to face the past and move towards the future. The book does contain the heavy content of a mother killing herself. It is off page, but I think that makes the book more middle school level than upper elementary.

 MS-OPTIONAL. Reviewer, C. Peterson.
