Keep Holding On by Susane Colasanti-ADVISABLE

Colasanti, Susane, Keep Holding On. Viking Press, 2012. Pgs. 202. Language: PG (8 swears, no “f”s), Violence: PG-13, Sexual Content: PG-13

Noelle is constantly bullied at school, her mom neglects her, and she never feels cared for or loved by anyone, but her best friend, Sherae. The only bright spot in her life is when she gets to skip out on Study Hall and make out with Matt Brennan. Her life starts changing, however, when Julian Porter comes along and begins to be genuinely interested in her. She’s not sure she can open up and be herself with him until a girl at school’s suicide opens her eyes to the dangerous path her life is heading down. Julian could be another friend and possibly her salvation, but will Noelle be able to take a leap of faith or is it already too late?

A touching, thought-provoking book for any girl who’s ever been bullied or had a crush. The plot is fairly well-developed. The main characters are likable and all the characters seem to be well-developed. Readers who like realistic fiction, school stories, and clean romance will enjoy reading this book. MS, HS. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
