Peepsqueak Wants a Friend by Leslie Ann Clark -- ESSENTIAL

Clark, Leslie Ann Peepsqueak Wants a Friend 32 pgs. Harper Collins, January 2013. $15.99. PICTURE BOOK.

Peepsqueak wants a friend to play with. Trouble is, all the other chicks in the barnyard have already paired off, and they're not interested in playing with anyone else. Undaunted, off Peepsqueak goes into the forest in search of a friend. But when he finds a new -- and unexpected -- playmate, the other chicks learn an important lesson about what friendship really means.

This is an adorable picture book with illustrations that are bright and happy and fun -- much like Peepsqueak himself. Although the refrain becomes a bit repetitive, the book is still enjoyable to read aloud, and its approach to the subject of friendship would be a great lead-in to lessons on the topic. The mystery of who Peepsqueak's new friend will be and how the others will react leaves lots of room for predictions and lively discussion.
