Tax season is upon us and I need to get my accounting taken care of, so this is only a brief return from hiatus. I'll be posting much more in February.
It's still gloom and doom in publishing, though there haven't been any more mass firings lately (knock on wood). And now that we seem to have a respite I do want to comment on the layoffs.
Publishing has needed cleaning up for years. Perhaps this means firing some staff, but the real problems are still out there, begging to be addressed: ridiculous advances for fifteen minute wonders, multiple books released about subjects that only the intellectual elite care about, an illogical supply/returns system, faltering bookstores, and more.
Some very powerful people in publishing with huge salaries decided to fire a bunch of people who make far less. I don't know if these layoffs were the right thing to do, but I do know that these same powerful people need to assume the responsibility and provide the leadership to fix the big issues that confront our industry.
