Stiefvater, Maggie The Raven Boys (Raven Cycle, Book 1). 416 pages. Scholastic Press, 2012. $18.99. Language: R (9 F's) Sexual Content: PG-13 Violence: PG-13.
Blue Sargent is used to her role in her psychic family: she increases power, but she herself does not possess it. All that changes when she sees a ghost in a crumbled churchyard late one evening, and knows that he is destined to die within the next year. But Gansey is not dead yet. He and his friends are alive and looking for a spiritual road, or "ley line," so they can bring an ancient king back to life. When Blue joins Gansey's team, the questions begin to pile up, even as they get closer to solving the mystery of the lines.
The twists and turns in this book, as well as the palpable suspense created by meaty foreshadowing and rich characterization, makes this one hard to put down. Stiefvater's phrasing and details are beautiful, but they do not make for an easy read; students who aren't focusing, or who have reading difficulties, may find the writing complex and confusing. Most should find the story well worth the effort, however. First in a series.
