Jack: Secret Vengeance by F. Paul Wilson-OPTIONAL

F. Paul Wilson, Jack: Secret Vengeance. TOR Books, 2011. Pgs. 295. Language: PG-13 (2 swears, no “f”s), Violence: PG-13, Sexual Content: PG-13

When Carson Tolliver asks out Jack’s neighbor, “Weezy” Louise, and expects sex from her. She rejects him, so he starts spreading a rumor that Louis is “Easy Weezy” and that they had sex together. Now Weezy refuses to go back to school and Jack is determined to make Carson pay for hurting his best friend. What starts as harmless pranks to humiliate Carson and make the guy believe his locker’s haunted turns into a supernatural puzzle.  As strange events start happening with regard to the Pineys, a group of Pine Barren natives believed to have supernatural power, Jack begins to wonder if Carson had something to do with one of the local Piney girls’ disappearances. Could Carson really have blood on his hands?

The characters are well-drawn, but lack something. The plot refers a lot to other novels in the series, but moves efficiently. Although the “ripped from headlines” feel to the book may make the readers uneasy, teens will be drawn to the spooky, mysterious nature of the book. Readers who like science fiction, mystery, and adventure will enjoy reading this book. MS, HS. OPTIONAL. Reviewer: Jessica Moody, Library Media Specialist, Olympus Jr. High. OPTIONAL.
