Prince Puggly of Spud and the Kingdom of Spiff by Robert Paul Weston -- ESSENTIAL

Weston, Robert Paul Prince Puggly of Spud and the Kingdom of Spiff 207 pgs. Razorbill, 2013. $15.99. Violence: PG; Language: PG; Sexual Content; G.

In this humorous tale with an important message, the bookish Princess Frannie of Spiff and unlikely Prince Puggly of Spud team up to fight their fashion-obsessed kingdoms. In the process, they show that it's not what you wear that counts, but who you are.

I loved this one. The author's witty and frequently surprising word choices made me laugh out loud several times, and the moral that we should judge people by their personalities instead of their clothes is admirable. It was easy to relate to and even admire Prince Puggly, who is afraid that no one likes him because of his unstylish clothes, and Princess Frannie, who wants to read books in her pajamas all day instead of attending uptight gatherings with the courtiers. In addition, the many colorful secondary characters added a lot of fun to the tale. Even the layout showed great attention to detail, from the different fonts used to highlight certain words to the amusing illustrations around the chapter headings. While it is perhaps intended for a younger audience, this is one of those rare books that could appeal to upper elementary school, middle, and high school students -- both boys and girls -- if presented in the right way.
