Book Review: Sea by Heidi R. Kling

Title: Sea
Author: Heidi R. Kling
Release Date: June 10th, 2010
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Age: Young Adult
Still haunted by nightmares of her mother’s death, fifteen-year-old Sienna Jones reluctantly travels to Indonesia with her father’s relief team to help tsunami orphans with their post traumatic stress disorder—something Sienna knows a lot about. Since her mother’s plane went missing over the Indian Ocean three years before, Sienna doesn’t do anything if it involves the ocean or planes, so this trip is a big step forward.
But the last thing she expects is to fall for Deni, a brooding Indonesian boy who lives at the orphanage, and just so happens to be HOT. When Deni hears a rumor that his father may be alive, Sienna doesn’t think twice about running away with him to the epicenter of the disaster. Unfortunately, what they find there could break both their hearts.
A compelling summer romance, Sea marks the arrival of a stunning new voice in YA.
I wanted to read this book since it was released last year. It sounded different than most YA books, and I have read amazing reviews!

Sea is the story of Sienna. She's fifteen years old and still have nightmares of her mother's death. She still can't accept the fact that her mother is lost forever, and his father is very worried. So he decides to invite her to Indonesia, where he is going to help tsunami orphans with their post traumatic stress disorder, and maybe Sienna can help / be helped.

Sienna is a great character. It's obvious she's depressed and scared without her mother, but she's very brave to accept traveling to Indonesia. I was so mad with her father for inviting her at first! But she managed to be stronger that I thought, and to enjoy her trip.

I really want to travel someday to Indonesia. I've seen tv shows / movies about Indonesia and the description of this book was very close to what I imagine. I don't think it would be so easy to find a hot Indonesian boy who speaks English, but it's fiction, and it worked!

Deni was amazing. He may be young of age, but as usual in those countries, he's very mature and actually an adult. He was so respectful with Siena, it was refreshing to find a boy like him in YA.

The ending left me kind of confused, but I have to congratulate the author for being so brave and write a realistic ending!

Overall, I'm very glad I read Sea. It was an amazing story, romantic, sometimes sad, but realistic! Definitely recommend it for everyone who wants to read an excellent contemporary YA book.
