Wild Wings by Gill Lewis -ADVISABLE

Lewis, Gill and illustrated by Onoda, Yuta Wild Wings 304 pgs. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, Ltd, 2011. $11.99.  (Rating: G)
When a young boy named Callum is shown a secret nest of endangered Osprey’s by an outcast girl named Iona, a chain of events is set in motion that inspire. Tracking the female bird on her migratory journey to Africa, Callum realizes she is in danger, but by reaching out through the internet, he finds out that with a little effort, the world can be a community.
I was surprised at how awesome this book was! The theme of environmentalism, friendship, cross-cultural connections, and activism were wonderfully put together –both realistic and inspiring! Here’s the problem –the cover, it’s not going to attract young readers, it’s too dated looking. I know better, and I still dreaded reading it because of that, but was incredibly surprised. This would make a great book for in-class assigned reading! (You won’t hear me say that very often!)
ELEMENTARY – ADVISABLE Reviewer: Stephanie MLS graduate & Author.
