Hest, Amy and Illustrated by Denos, Julia Letters to Leo 160 pgs. Candlewick, 2012. $12.70. (Rating: G)
Annie’s father finally let her have a dog, so she decides to keep a sort of journal –a collection of hidden notes to Leo, her dog. The letters detail advice to Leo, how her day went, what her dad is up to, and the ups and downs of school life.
This was a quirky, cute, and original book. I think students will love the variety of text, the illustrations, the stories, the pet dog element, and mostly how close this format makes a reader feel to the narrator and their life.
