Irena Sendlar and the Children of the Warsaw Ghetto by Rubin - ADVISABLE

Rubin, Susan Goldman Irena Sendlar and the Children of the Warsaw Ghetto, illustrated by Bill Farnsworth.  Holiday House, 2011.  PICTURE BOOK.  Content: G.

Irena Sendlar was a young Catholic social worker in Warsaw at the beginning of WWII.  With many connections and dozens of plans, Irena managed to save almost 400 children out of the ghetto.  Even when she was caught and almost executed, she found a way to continue her work.  She even saved records of every child, their origin and where they were hiding, so that after the war some of the children could be reunited with their families.  Irena’s story wasn’t known until 1989, after Poland became a democratic country.  Irena Sendlar belongs beside Schindler and his list in thanks for her courage, for something she felt was right in her heart.
