West is a fifteen year old girl who only has her brother and his best friend, Chord, left alive. The rest of her family has been killed because they live in a society were people’s genetic alternates are raised and when they are in their teen years they are given an assignment to find and kill their twin alternate. The best fighter is supposed to win and it propels a society of survival of the fittest. With all of West’s family dead, it’s especially devastating when her brother dies trying to help his best friend Chord with his assignment. Chord tries to keep up his promise to West’s brother and watch out for her, but West wants to protect Chord because he is the only person she has alive that she cares about. West falls into a profession of killing people’s alts for a money and she just might pay the price.
This book is interesting and has a lot of action, but I have serious qualms with teenagers hunting and killing each other, especially as the norm in society. I felt like the character was a hypocrite because she was so devastated by the loss of her family, yet she took a job killing others. I also didn’t understand the motive behind the main characters actions, and not having the understanding made the book drag on a bit. Overall, interesting idea and it probably will keep the attention of most teenagers, but it wasn’t my favorite.
