McDaniel, Lurlene The Year of Luminous Love 384 pgs. Delacorte Books for Young Readers ,2013. $13.01. Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: PG13 ; Violence: PG13.
This story features three best friends, recent high school graduates, who each face different challenges. From cancer, to controlling boyfriends, to love triangles, to lackluster parents. Things come to a head when they travel to Italy together. The girls will have to grow up in their own way, support each other, and face life altering events.
I felt like this book was a like a soap opera, making it very readable. While there were some definite life lessons, many plot threads were improbable and sort of cheesy. For example, the controlling boyfriend is a high ranking drug dealer, who comes to untimely end in a most timely manner. The impromptu trip to Italy includes a potential love affair with a billionaire vineyard owing playboy! I think that students will have trouble connecting to the three main characters –since these teens are more mature than most adults I know! Also a lot of sexual content -although none of it is explicit.
