Castrovilla, Selene Revolutionary Friends: General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette Illustrated by Drazen Kozjan Calkins Creek, 2013. $16.95 PICTURE BOOK Content: G.
Lafayette was a young French man who was very interested in America’s fight for freedom. He was denied permission to go to America by the French government, so he hired his own ship and went on his own. Lafayette was interested in George Washington’s cause and quickly the two became good friends, with Washington calling Lafayette his son. As they learned to trust each other in war, their friendship grew, eventually Lafayette was shot in the leg in a battle, but still managed to help with the war. The book ends there, but there is a couple of pages left in the story that are included at the back of the book, which tell the rest of Lafayette and Washington’s story.
This book had a simple description of Lafayette and Washington’s work in the Revolutionary War, and their story is heartwarming. But the overall effect was lost when in the middle of the story, the pictures end and the rest of the story is included in a two page excerpt at the back. The pictures are okay, and the added quotes from Lafayette are interesting, but it seems like the overall effect is lacking.
