Publishing Imprints Explained

Sarah Weinman recently finished a multi-part series about publishers and their imprints. She's done a truly amazing job breaking down what is an extremely confusing world.

Part I - Macmillan
Part II - Simon & Schuster
Part III - Hachette
Part IV - HarperCollins
Part V - Penguin Group
Part VI - Random House

It's an agent's job to keep track of each publisher and their imprints, their editors, and who's buying what and for how much. We also have to consider the internal politics, the success or failure of other books on a publisher's list, and more. It can be pretty mind-numbing.
