The Orphan Rescue by Anne Dublin –ADVISABLE

Dublin, Anne The Orphan Rescue 124 pgs. Second Story Press 2010. $8.95. (Language-G Violence-G; Sexual Content-G).
Set in 1937 Poland, a family is forced to make some tough decisions. After their parents die, Miriam and her younger brother live with their grandparents. But there just isn’t enough money or enough to eat. So the family decides that David must live at an orphanage. David is sad but like's that there is food to eat! But when he is sold to a factory to do a dangerous job, its up to Miriam to rescue him.
Cover the cover if you want your students to read this one. Or have older students learn some photoshop skills and create a new cover –because this one looks dated and drab. Yet the story is simple and well told. While there is a sort of unrealistic ending, I think the lessons learned about the fate of children in that time period, is worth it.
