Set around 1850 –the reader follows the story of a 14year old named Lucky. A dark-skinned boy from ‘Cape Verde’, he didn’t grow up a slave, but a respected member of the crew on a whaling ship. He is thrilled to be setting out on another voyage when his unknown older brother kidnaps him and Lucky misses the departure of his ship. Forced to work at a mill, Lucky meets an escaped slave, Daniel. When the slave catchers come to town, Lucky must risk his own freedom to help his friend and learns more about the plight of fugitive slaves.
Despite the age of the main character this book is perfect for older elementary students. I really the historical setting, and the appealing idea of seeing this time period from a young person’s perspective. But I just didn’t connect with this book very well. The plot kind of meanders and is unbelievable at times. For example I think students won’t buy into the fact that Lucky stays in his bad situation –despite the boundaries set in place. Given the personality of Lucky, his bravery, and freedom to go out and about –it just doesn’t make sense.
