Pearson, Ridley Shell Game (Kingdom Keepers 5), 544 p. Disney/Hyperion, 2012. $18. Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (violence without gory descriptions of bloodshed).
The Kingdom Keepers are barely holding off the Overtakers’ attacks on the Base. Besides defending that, however, all of the Keepers are expected to attend a cruise, as the Disney cruise line sets off to be the first ship through the new locks on the Panama Canal. As soon as they step on board, however, the fight continues. The Overtakers have figured out how to involuntarily take over minds – and not only have they suborned Cast Members , but they possess Finn’s own mother. Pearson brings in more characters, more action, unending danger, but nothing in the way of victory, resolution or even hope for the Keepers.
I am a huge Disney fan, but I am getting kind of tired of 500 page books where the improbably actions with in a couple of days and nothing of substance happens. How many more am I going to have to suffer through before the KK’s start gaining even a little ground here? My enthusiasm for the original books in the series has waned considerably.
