Crewe, Megan, The Lives We Lost. Hyperion, 2013. Pgs. 276. Language: R (33 swears, 5 “f”s), Violence: PG-13, Sexual Content: PG

Kaelyn’s island and its residents have been ravaged by a deadly virus. Communication has been cut of. On a scavenging spree, she finds a vaccine her father was working on. She knows she must get this to someone who can replicate it. Soon, she sets off with her friends on a cross-country fight for survival. Will she be able t get the vaccine to the right people? What dangers await them?

Although the storytelling is a little choppy, the characters are distinct and easy to sympathize with. This page-gripping series will keep you reading and wishing for Kaelyn’s survival. Due to language and violence it is best for older teens and adults.  HS. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Jessica Moody, Library Media Specialist, Olympus Jr. High.
