Water in the Park by Emily Jenkins -- ADVISABLE

Graegin, Stephanie and Emily Jenkins Water in the Park: A Book About Water and the Times of Day 40 pgs. Schwartz & Wade Books, 2013. $16.99. PICTURE BOOK.

Shows the comings and goings in a city park over the course of a single summer day, paying special attention to the importance of water to everyone there -- from the three-legged dog playing on the shores of the pond, to the children dumping water in the sandbox so they can make sand castles, to the volunteer caretakers nurturing the flowers and other plants.

The detailed illustrations are a nice complement to this creative look at both community areas and an important natural resource. The book would be a good start to discussions about activities that go on throughout the day in other public spaces -- such as schools and rec centers -- as well as the many varied uses of other natural resources. It could also make a great story starter for young creative writers.
