Celia is a triplet with the power to see people’s pasts when she touches them. Her sisters’ powers seem more beneficial because one sister can see what people are thinking now and the other sister can see the future. With her sister having their powers, Celia always feels left out and she feels like her life is not her own, until she helps save Jude from drowning. Jude is a guitarist who trips on the pier and while Celia races down to the beach to help him, she sees a girl come out of the water with Jude. Celia and the girl from the water touch while reviving Jude and Celia realizes that this girl from the water is two people within one body: Lo and Naida. Lo loves the water and wants to be with her other water sisters, but Naida used to be human and will do whatever it takes to get back to her human lifestyle, even kill another human. Celia uses her power to see the past to help Lo and Naida figure out how they got to be water people. Lo uses the knowledge that Celia gives her and realizes that there is a dark power that has created this water world and used the girls’ souls. The girls’ stories come to a climatic ending that is satisfying, yet leaves more to be uncovered in the series.
I think Jackson Pearce is a great storyteller. She creates vivid and realistic supernatural worlds with strong characters. This book drew me into a world that was believable and I can’t wait to read more in the series. The covers are also great and will draw young adult readers.
