Loggins, Kenny Moose n' Me 32 pgs. Good Ol' Dog Publishing, Feb. 2013. $14.95. PICTURE BOOK.
As Loggins says in the foreword, there's always one special dog that you'll never forget. For Loggins, that dog was Moose. This book tells the tale of their childhood connection, which remained strong even when Loggins left home to become a singer -- so strong, in fact, that when he's on stage one night during a performance he knows deep in his heart that Moose has died. He finds comfort, however, in the belief that he and Moose will meet again in heaven.
The beautiful, soft illustrations are a nice choice for depicting the love between the boy and his dog. Unfortunately, as is often the case with lyrics turned into picture books, the text doesn't flow as well as it could, and is filled with awkward repetitions more befitting a sung version. This one is especially difficult to read aloud without practice, and for young children to sound out, because it employs dialect -- many apostrophes (as in the title) and grammatically incorrect sentences. The comforting lyrics may be nice to share with a child who has lost a beloved pet, although it fits a more select audience, as the ending is very religious in nature, with such lines as, "People talk a'how we'll all be reunited when we pass through the Pearly Gates" and "We all believe we'll be meetin' our maker when it's long past time to spare."
