Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo - ADVISABLE

Bardugo, Leigh Siege and Storm, 432 p. Henry Holt, 2013.  Violence: PG.

Try as they might, Mal and Alina can not escape the grasp of the Darkling.  Even when they take refuge on the Sturmhond’s own ship, they are still drawn into the Darkling’s machinations.  Alina, however, discovers a clue in a red book – the existence of not only a second amplifier, but the possibility of a third.  How much power does Alina need to defeat the Darkling? Is she willing to risk Mal’s love for it, or is she willing to even risk her own sanity?  There are secret allies to aid and new stumbling blocks to overcome.

Bardugo’s second book adds more depth to her overall tale, alternately frustrating, as you watch Alina abandon Mal, and hopeful as she learns more about this power of light she possesses.  Only for die hard high fantasy readers though – this is not an easy read.  Bring your brains with you.
