Leonard, Niall Crusher, 323 p. Delacorte Press, 2012. $17.99. Language: R (122 swears, 66 “f”); Mature Content: R; Violence: R.
Finn Maguire’s stepdad is murdered in their home and police detectives suspect that Finn has something to do with his death. In an attempt to clear his name, Finn follows clues from his stepdad’s research to find his true killer. These clues point directly to the mob and will threaten Finn’s life as well as the lives of others before he learns the truth.
The first half of the book is mild compared to the second half. There is mention of sexual content, 10 “f” words, and a mild description of violence in the first 161 pages, but soon after that the language, sex, and violence levels surpass what is appropriate for even high school students. It is unfortunate since Leonard creates a suspenseful plot full of unexpected twists and characters that you either love or despise. I was glued to the pages predicting what would happen next even amongst the swearing and graphic content.
