Colors for Zena by Monica Wellington - OPTIONAL

Wellington, Monica  Colors for Zena  Dial Books, 2013.  $16.99  PICTURE BOOK  Content: G.

Zena and her dog wake up to a world that is black and white, but as they turn the corner in their neighborhood they find a street full of one color, like red, yellow or blue.  As she walks through the neighborhood looking for all the colors she realizes that she likes a world with a lot of different colors and she collects an orange lion, purple dinosaur and green frog to bring with her on her walk.  In the end they create a multicolored world.

The illustrations are bright and clean which is appealing, but the overall story seems like a boring version of the book Mouse Paint.  It does draw attention to the reader to appreciate a world of color. Young readers might find it fun to look at the pictures, but the story is simple enough it should be a board book.
