Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses by Kimberly and James Dean - ESSENTIAL

Dean, Kimberly and James Dean  Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses  Harper, 2013.  $17.99  PICTURE BOOK  Content: G.

Pete the cat is having a sad day until Grumpy Toad comes along and gives Pete his blue sunglasses.  Toad tells Pete that he will see things in a new way when he puts on the glasses and it’s true.  Pete sees the birds singing and the bright sun.  Pete goes on his skateboard and comes across other animals who are having bad days too, so he shares his sunglasses with them to help them be happy.  Eventually, Pete falls and breaks his glasses, but Owl explains that you can choose to look for the good in every day.

This is a simple book with repetitive phrases and parts that are predictable, but the overall message of finding good in the day is clear for young readers.  The bright and colorful pictures are appealing and add to the positive message.
